Possibility Gap
It occured to me today while driving down the streets of Manhattan, that our youth feel tremendous anxiety because of uncertainty about their futures. There is so much information out there that there is an assumption that you can find out anything you want and therefore get anything you want. All you have to do is want it badly enough and be able to visualize your dreams, and you can make it happen. So, I guess this means if you don't make it happen, there is something wrong with you. There is so much more that has to happen between wanting and getting. A tremendous amount of hard work and committment, focus and tenacity as well as guidance, support and education, go into a successful pursuit in any field. This speaks to the "possiblity gap" as I like to call it. What are your thoughts on this? Let me know.

I think that your post also speaks to a society which is addicted to instant gratification and baby boomers behaving like helicopter parents looking for validation in the success of their kids. It took me until I was thirty (and two careers and masters) before finding my niche in the financial services industry where I'm now able to custom design my work day. As a wise carpenter/filmmaker said to me once: You have to crack eggs to make an omelet.
ReplyDeleteTamini, I'm one of Olivia's college friends. I came across your blog when I was reading hers and I am SO happy I did. I am definitely in the Possibility Gap. Your post about it is comforting and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
